Witness provides key clue after Villagers’ vehicles damaged by fleeing pickup in hit-and-run accident

Two Villagers’ vehicles were damaged by a pickup truck that fled the scene of an accident Sunday near Rolling Acres Plaza.

Lady Lake police were called at about 5 p.m. to the scene of the crash on U.S. Hwy. 27/441 near its intersection with Avenida Central.

Lady Lake police were at the scene of the accident Sunday on U.S. Hwy. 27:441 near Rolling Acres Plaza.

Carol Ann Heuer, 57, of The Villages, was at the wheel of a 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe traveling southbound on U.S. Hwy. 27/441 when she was slowing down to make a right turn into the shopping center, according to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department. David Barnhorst, 79, of The Villages, was driving a silver 2012 Toyota Camry and was traveling behind Heuer’s vehicle. He slowed down as he saw her braking. However, a  2002 Chevy S-10 pickup behind both of them did not slow down and set off a chain-reaction rear-end accident. The pickup left the scene of the accident.

Villager David Barnhorst’s Camry sustained front- and rear-end damage in the crash.

A witness followed the pickup, obtained its license plate number and relayed it back to the two Villagers whose vehicles had been damaged.

Police went to the Fruitland Park home of the registered owner where they found an intoxicated man as well as the pickup which had front-end damage. However, the man said he had no knowledge of the accident and would not answer questions.

The pickup believed to be involved in the accident was tracked down in Fruitland Park.

The owner of the vehicle was contacted and said he allows the man to use the vehicle. The owner was at work at the time of the accident.

The investigation into the accident continues.
