A woman fled to Villages Fire Station 45 Monday night after she was allegedly attacked and strangled at a home in the Village of Dunedin.

The woman broke free from her alleged attacker, got into her car and drove away from the home on Leyton Place and sought help at the Villages Public Safety Department station. The woman told a Sumter County sheriff’s deputy she had been sleeping and woke up to 50-year-old Johnny Lewis McCoy kneeling over her with both his hands around her neck, according to the arrest report. She said she feared she would lose consciousness. While the woman was speaking with the deputy, McCoy repeatedly called her cell phone and apologized for hitting her. When the deputy interviewed McCoy, he admitted holding the woman’s throat in anger and said he was sorry for doing so.

He was arrested on a charge of domestic battery by strangulation and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center.
