The World War 2 Club of The Villages represented by club founder Don Goldstein presented a check for $15,000 to Villages Honor Flight at their monthly meeting at Colony Cottage Recreation Center on Monday afternoon. “This will come close to paying for an entire flight of veterans,” said Peter Tetrault, Villages Honor Flight fundraising chair.
“You do good stuff, really good stuff,” said Goldstein referring to the mission of Villages Honor Flight to take Veterans to Washington D.C.
“I know it isn’t easy,” continued Goldstein, “it is a lot of hard work. Pay day and mail call are the most important days to a soldier, and you all take care of both.”
Since its formation eight years ago, the WW2 club has been a strong supporter of the Villages Honor Flight. Including Monday’s check, the WW2 club has given close to $50,000 to Honor Flight. Goldstein said that the club doesn’t do a lot of fundraising, “we have raffles and a music show, but most of the money we raise comes straight from the members,” said Goldstein.
Goldstein is a military historian, a New York Times bestselling author and Peabody winner for his work with David Brinkley and Peter Jennings. He started the WW2 club to make sure the real story of World War II is being told. The club has monthly lectures, movie nights and a book club.
