WWII vet may throw out first tourney pitch

World War II veteran Edna Solsvig is planning to be in the stands at the Veterans Softball Tournament Sunday at Saddlebrook Softball Complex.

And with a little coaxing, the Villages resident may be persuaded to throw out the first pitch.

She was in the stands this past Sunday when a team of women veterans, hereby known as the Women Warriors, staged a miraculous comeback to beat an all-male team to win a place in the finals.

Edna still golfs and will turn 90 on Dec. 18.

She attended Hunter College in New York and then joined the Navy in Communications. She served in Washington D.C. as a teletype operator and then in Kansas.

She took place in the Villages Honor Flight in June. While touring the war memorials in Washington, D.C., Edna met former U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole.

The Women Warriors take the field at 9 a.m. Sunday. The championship game is scheduled for noon.

The public is encouraged to come out and watch the competition which features Villages military veterans from all branches.
