Villages Regatta set this weekend at Ashland Pond in Lynnhaven

The Villages Regatta, the first of six races through May for radio-controlled, wind-powered miniature yachts, will continue  Sunday at Ashland Pond in the village of Lynnhaven.

The boats will race rom 9:30 a.m. to noon today.

Part of the EC12 series of regattas, the event features boats that are five feet long with six foot masts, said Alan Perkins, a regatta organizer. He said the 31 boats entered must meet strict design standards and all have fiberglass hulls made by a few approved manufacturers. The boats are based upon the design of a potential defender yacht in the 1960 America’s Cup.

“This particular class is very popular,” he said. “Hopefully, we’ll get some decent breeze. There should be quite a crowd of people here watching.”

Eight boats are entered from The Villages and the rest are from Georgia, South Carolina and other areas of Florida.

Next month, the national championship for this particular class of boat will be held in North Carolina followed by monthly Florida regattas in Palm Beach Gardens, Naples, St. Augustine and other locations.
