DIVISION TWO ACTION

-Terry Yanny, D2 Statistician, reporting

Three game layoff didn’t hurt league leading Giants and Phillies. And Friday they battle each other for the top spot.

Phillies 7 – Astros 6
The Phillies and Astros tied in the hits and errors column with 16 – 2.  The difference was the Phillies scored 1 run in the 5th and the Astros didn’t.  After a scoreless game thru 3, each team put 3 on the board in the 4th.  Tony Prettitore had a SF in the 5th, driving in Dan McPhearson after he led off with a double and moved to 3rd on Ken Link’s single.  Down by 2, the Astros got 4 straight hits in the bottom of the 7th and 2 runs.  But Phillies pitcher Gary Arnold got 3 of the next 4 batters to squeek out the win.  Tony Prettitore and Frank LaBarbera each went 3 for 3 for the Phillies and Dave Strzelecki was 3 for 3 for the Astros.

Giants 16 – Cubs 5
The Giants have the best defense in the league and showed it by holding the Cubs to 14 hits and only 5 runs.  The Giants lead the league with the least amount of runs allowed – 45.  Bob Dulac had the hot bat for the Giants with a 4 for 4 day, along with Al Sklar going 3 for 3.  Winning pitcher John Ashby and Rick LaFerriere also had 3 hits each.  Bill Begely led the Cubs with 3 hits.

Dodgers 16 – Reds 7
The Dodgers broke a 2 game losing streak by racking up 26 hits to the Reds 14.  Dodger pitcher Steve White kept the Reds bats cool in picking up the win.  Jim Morton had an inside the park HR.  Rick Poland added 2 triples, along with Bruce Forrester and Mike Conklin each adding a triple.  Len Griffin was 3 for 3 for the Dodgers.  Marty Berger was 3 for 4 with an inside the park HR for the Reds.

Royals 15 – Angels 10
The Royals put an end to a 2 game losing streak by stopping the Angels 3 game winning streak.  The Royals took a 14 to 9 lead into the 5th inning and held the Angels to 1 run the rest of the way.  Winning pitcher Bob Marano held the Angels to 1 hit in each of the last 2 innings to preserve the win.  Dave Oatley had 2 triples and 5 RBI’s to lead the Royals.  Tom Curley, Jim Greco and Will Kutter had 3 hits each for the Royals.  Scott Marshall had the hot bat for the Angels with 4 hits, including 3 triples.  Ken Pozzolo and Grant Barthels were 3 for 3 for the Angels.

Diamondbacks 8 – Padres 6
Pitcher Ron Hellier got the first win on the season for the D-Backs.  Frank Murth and Frank Pierce each went 3 for 3 for the D-Backs.  Tim Carroll lost his 82 game hitting streak and Jerry Nugent led the Padres with 3 hits.

Brewers 10 – Rockies 8
The Brewers started a new win streak after a previous loss by shutting down the Rockies in the bottom of the 7th to preserve the win for pitcher Gary Luck.  The Rockies held the Brewers scoreless in the 5th, 6th & 7th innings, but could only muster 3 runs themselves and came up 2 short.  Tom McGann, Tom Ramberg and Jed Doan led the Brewers with 3 hits each.  John Flor had 3 hits for the Rockies.

Cards 18 – Marlins 17 (9 innings)
The Cards won their 3rd game in a row and stopped the 4 game win streak of the Marlins with a 9 inning game.  The Marlins looked like they had the game in control, leading 16 – 10 thru 4 innings.  But winning pitcher Ken Semmel shut down the Marlins in the 5th, 6th & 7th innings.  Trailing by 6, the Cards got the big rally to tie the game and send it into extra innings.  The extra inning rule of starting a player on 2nd base didn’t help either team in the 8th as it was still tied.  In the 9th, the Marlins were able to score a run.  After an error by the Marlins allowed the Cards to put runners on 1st and 3rd, Harry Van Dyke drove in the tying run with a SF.  Ken Semmel got his 5th hit of the game to put 2 runners on for manager Jim Allison, who drove in the winning run with a single.  Nate Leech increased his league leading consecutive game hits to 111 with a 5 for 5 day.  Ken Semmel also went 5 for 5 for the Cards.  Jim Nocito had an inside the park HR for the Marlins.

Mets 16 – Nationals 12
The Mets picked up their 2nd straight win for pitcher Duke Dutkiewicz.  The Mets out hit the Nationals 25 – 18.  The Mets got 3 hits from Terry Yanny, Chuck Tomney, Pat Perkins, Jack Meagher and Tom Ledoux.  Norm O’Brien and Paul Lewis led the Nationals with 3 hits each.

Braves 16 – Pirates 2
The Braves evened their record to 3 – 3 and broke a 3 game losing streak by pounding the Pirates.  The Braves took advantage of the Pirates 5 errors in securing the win for pitcher Emil Notorantonio.  Manager Lew Burhans had 3 hits and Manny Sanchez an inside the park HR for the Braves.  Ralph Calfee had 2 hits for the Pirates.
