DIVISION TWO ACTION

ROYALS TAKE A HALF GAME LEAD;
SIX TEAMS NOW TIED FOR SECOND

Marlins 14 – Pirates 12
The Marlins took a slim 3 run lead into the 7th and held the Pirates to 1 run for the the victory by pitcher Bob Fleming.  Don Brozick was 4 for 4 and Pat Furlo and Duane Broschat had 3 hits for the Marlins.  Furlo also had 2 triples.  Bob Fleming was 2 for 2 for the Fish.  Craig Dahlquist had the big bat for the Pirates with an OTF HR and 2 doubles.  Jim Joseph was 3 for 3.

Padres 12 – Nationals 10
Five runs in the first inning gave the Padres the lead that they never relinquished, holding on to give pitcher Mike Guadagnolo the win.  Mike Labetti and Jerry Nugent led the Padres with 3 hits each.  Roy Warter was 4 for 4 and John Arango, Gene Guerriero & Milt Casablanca had 3 hits for the Nationals.

Rockies 13 – Phillies 10
The Phillies mounted a comeback by taking the lead 6 – 5 thru 4 innings.  But the Rockies took the lead with 8 runs over the next 2 innings and held the Phillies to 4 for the win.  Fred Hughes got the win with support from newbe Jim Smith’s two triples and 3 for 3 from him and John Flor.  Tom Guinan added an inside the park HR.  Bob Strolin had an inside the park HR and Randy Bowen had a double and triple for the Phillies.

Braves 18 – Cubs 14
The Braves were coasting to the win, leading 18 to 6 thru 6 innings.  The Cubs gave the Braves something to think about by sending 14 to the plate and scoring 8  in the 7th.  Reno Saculla went 4 for 4 and John Reedy, Chris Holck and Bob Passiatore had 3 hits for winning pitcher Emil Notorantonio.  Herb White had a 5 for 5 day and Ed Niles and Bill Johnson went 4 for 4 for the Cubs.

Dodgers 10 – Giants 8 (8 innings)
The Giants put a 5 spot on the board in the 2nd and were held scoreless till they tied the game with 2 in the bottom of the 6th.  Neither team took advantage of having the top of the line up at bat in the 7th.  After 2 quick outs, it looked the the Dodgers were going to strand their extra inning runner at 2 base.  Not so fast says Mike Conklin, he ripped a triple, and 3 hits later the Dodgers put a 3 spot on the board in the top of the 8th.  The Giants got a single and SF to score 1 in the bottom half, but they stranded 2 to end the game.  Steve White got the win and Len Griffin, Mike Conklin and George Slack had 3 hits for the Dodgers.  Rick Poland added an inside the park HR.  John Iorio had 3 hits for the Giants.

Astros 11 – Reds 10
The Reds held a 9 – 0 lead after 3 innings, but the Astros bats woke up and their defense shut down the Reds allowing only 1 run the rest of the way.  After trailing by 1 in the bottom of the 7th, the Astros loaded the bases and a single by Ron Young drove in the tying and winning runs.  Pitcher Ray Beaupre notched the win for the Astros.  Gene Mand and Don Mulneix had 3 hits for the Astros.  Harold Holiman and Tom Myers had 3 hits for the Reds.

Cards 9 – Angels 2
It was a case of to little to late for the Angels.  They managed only 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th.  Pitcher Duane Miller kept the Angels hitters off guard, picking up the win.  John Barrett paced the Cards with 3 hits.  Only 2 Angels managed 2 hits.

Brewers 14 – Mets 13
The Mets had the bases loaded with 1 out in the 6th, leading 12 – 9, when the Brewers turned a double play to end a big threat.  The Brewers responded with 4 in the bottom of the 6th to take the lead.  The Mets got things going again in the 7th by scoring 1 to tie the game and had 2 on with only 1 out.  A fielder’s choice and an out gave the Brewers the chance they needed and they responded with 3 straight hits to score the winning run.  Winning pitcher Gary Luck got 4 for 4 performances from Chick Cicatelli and Tom Ramberg.  Gary DePalma was 3 for 3.  Ev Arnold, Tim Healey, Pat Perkins and Jack Meagher had 3 hits for the Mets, and Jim Roose and Jack Finley had inside the park HR’s.

Royals 10 – D-Backs 6
The Royals put 8 on the board thru 2 innings and then it was the battle of the defenses with the Royals coming out on top.  Bob Marano got the win and Dave Oatley went 3 for 3 and an inside the park HR by Alan Jackson for the Royals.  Frank Murth, Frank Pierce and Dave Hinkley had 2 hits for the D-Backs.
