ORLANDO- The Villages Baseball Club brought their hot bats and unloaded for 21 hits against the Orlando Mariners for a 15-6 win at Dover Field in Orlando on Saturday. VBC got of to a quick start scoring 2 runs in the first inning on singles by Nelson Menendez, Randy Pawlowski and Jim Glover. VBC scored 4 more times in the second inning off Chuck Tomney’s double brought in 2 runs and Earl Bellasario’s single scored Tomney. The Mariners answered in the bottom of the second with 4 runs to make the score 6-5.
Starting pitcher Menendez closed the scorebook on the Mariners shuting them down for the next four innings allowing only 2 more hits. VBC opened the gates with seven runs in the top of the sixth inning off Bellasario’s fourth hit of the day scored Mike Rusaw. Rusaw had a single that scored 2 runs after singles by Jim Glover, Jim Carmichael and Jim Kitzler. Tomney lead off the inning with his second double of the day.
VBC would score 2 more runs in the sixth frame off Glover’s double and Carmichael single allowed Kitzler and Jack McGroarty’s rbi singles to increase the lead to 15-5. The Mariners scored an unearned run in the last inning to close the game at 15-6.
“When you have every player get a hit, it makes you realize that off season practice helps build confidence. Our guys have been focused on improving and it showed today” said Manager Mike Blankenship.
VBC looks to host an exciting weekend of action with two home games in the CITY FIRE Restaurants Spring Kickoff Classic February 22-23. Saturday‘s matchup will be against the Melbourne Americans, a former World Series champion at 11:00 on Saturday. Sunday‘s 1:00 start will be a rematch against the Orlando Mariners. Both games will be played at VBC Field at Millennium
Park in Wildwood, off Powell Road near Brownwood Paddock Square in The Villages.
