James Smith

James C. “Jim“ or “JC” Smith, 70, of Summerfield, FL passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2014. He was born on June 28, 1943 in Plaistow, NH to the late James E. Smith and Evelyn (Parson) Smith. JC was a harness horse driver who enjoyed the thrill of racing with over 500 wins, which led to his induction into the Scarborough Downs Hall of Fame. After racing he was a foreman for Cashel Stud Farm in Ocala. He operated a successful lawn care service while being employed by Wal-Mart in Summerfield. His love of the community was evidenced by the countless number of hours he donated to caring for the building and grounds at the First Baptist Church of Summerfield. He is survived by his wife of seven years, Barbara Brockway of Summerfield; four children, Donald Smith of Williamsburg, VA, Scott Smith (wife, Sherilyn) of Redwood, NY, Arthur Smith (wife, Michele) of Delray Beach, FL; Christine Durning (husband, Aaron) of Ocklawaha; 17 grandchildren; two brothers, Tom “TD” Smith and Preston “Putt” Smith. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Forrest “Woody” Smith. Funeral services will be held at 11am on Wednesday April 2, 2014 at the First Baptist Church of Summerfield with Pastor Brad Boyd officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Memorial Contributions may be made to Cornerstone Hospice, 2445 Lane Park Road Tavares, FL 32778. Interment will follow at Crum Cemetery.
