Fate of two Historic Live Oak trees up for debate on Monday evening

The fate of two Historic Live Oak trees will be decided Monday evening by the Lady Lake Commission.

The trees in question are located at  La Plaza Grande Professional Center on the Historic Side of The Villages.

The property is co-owned by 83-year-old Ellen Robards, her daughter Janet Varnell and Varnell’s husband Brian Warwick.

They hope to sell the property and see a medical office built there. But unless they win permission to take down the trees, the sale is in jeopardy.

On Nov. 18, a majority of town commissioners indicated to Varnell and Robards that they would not stand in their way thanks to revisions to their plan for their property which originally called for the removal of a much larger tree. However, Commissioner Paul Hannan, who has a history of voting in favor of saving trees, was not present at that meeting.

The trees won another round of support on Dec 8, when the Lady Lake Planning and Zoning Board voted 3-2 to deny a request to remove the two trees. The Planning and Zoning Board acts in an advisory capacity to the commission. Its recommendation is not binding.

The commission meets at 6 p.m. Monday at Lady Lake Town Hall.
