U.S. Rep. Nugent votes against controversial trade agreement

Congressman Rich Nugent voted Friday against the Trade Authority Promotion, a measure President Barack Obama has desperately tried to push through Congress.

The TPA passed by the narrowest of margins – 219-211 – in the House of Representatives.

However, the president’s own party cobbled together enough votes, to torpedo the companion Trade Adjustment Assistance bill, intended to compensate workers who are displaced by trade agreements. In so doing, Democrats have forced the TPA legislation back to the Senate where it likely will not pass.

Villages Tea Party President Aileen Milton hailed Friday’s legislative action as a victory, but said the Democrats are too busy patting themselves on the back.

“The Democrats have given themselves too must credit for defeating this bill in the House. The conservative groups and organizations have been pounding the pavement for a long time to defeat this trade bill,” Milton said.

“We finally got enough Republicans to understand their base was not happy with giving Obama anymore authority or power. The American people won this one. Not the parties,” she added.
