Villagers’ son chosen to lead school board in Brevard County

Villagers Helene and Ed Ziegler are very proud of their son Andy’s latest achievement.

He was recently named chairman of the Brevard County School Board. Living in the Melbourne area since he graduated from the Florida Institute of Technology, Andy has always been very involved in civic organizations. He was past president of the Rotary and has been elected to the school board three times.

Andy saw the importance of education and charitable work growing up. Ed went to night school to earn his degree in engineering while their children were small.  And Helene went to college when the children were older.  She and her son Andy actually graduated one year apart in the early 1980s. Andy majored in computer science and he and his wife Patty have owned a computer business in Melbourne for 26 years. Helene majored in marketing.

Andy is a lot like his father, said Helene.

“He is tenacious, hard-working, thinks about everything.”

She thinks his tenure as chairman will be interesting.

“Andy is not afraid to be controversial. He will fight for his opinion,” she said.

Having a son in Florida brought the Zieglers to The Villages 14  years ago. After Helene’s experiences trying to assist her parents long distance, she knew she wanted to be just a couple of hours away from one of her children. Finding The Villages through friends was the perfect solution for the Zieglers.
