Steven Alan De Canio, 50, who lives on Alesio Street, was behind the wheel of a golf cart when he ran a stop sign shortly after 11 p.m. Friday on Old Camp Road, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. After the golf cart nearly hit a curb, a deputy directed De Canio to park the vehicle, but in so doing the golf cart nearly struck the deputy’s patrol car.

De Canio told the deputy he had been at City Fire.

The deputy asked De Canio to participate in field sobriety exercises.

“I know what I could do. I could call my father to come pick me up and this could all be over with,” De Canio told the deputy.

When the deputy again asked De Canio to participate in field sobriety exercises, he asked, “Do I have to?”

He struggled through the exercises and at one point admitted, “I can’t do these.”

He refused to provide a breath sample.

He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center where bond was set at $1,000.
