Man arrested after snatching sleeping mother’s car in Village of Silver Lake

Keith Nicholas Barnum

A 39-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly snatched his sleeping mother’s car keys in the Village of Silver Lake.

The woman contacted Lady Lake police after her 2007 Hyundai Sonata and her son, Keith Nicholas Barnum, went missing on Jan. 4.

Barnum’s girlfriend called the Villager the following day and told her Barnum had crashed her car into a tree in Spring Hill, according to an arrest affidavit.

The mother also discovered that in December, Barnum had used her credit card at the T-Mobile store on Bichara Boulevard at La Plaza Grande to purchase a cell phone and set up an account. A charge of $474.98 was made on her credit card.

He was booked Tuesday at the Lake County Jail on $7,000 bond.

Barnum, who lives with his mother, has a history of arrests, including an arrest for driving under the influence while traveling in a golf cart this past September in The Villages.
