Village of Belvedere man gets jail time after driving golf cart down County Road 466

Shawn Patrick Maloney

A Village of Belvedere man has been sentenced to nine months in jail in connection with his arrest in 2017 after driving a golf cart on County Road 466.

Shawn Patrick Maloney, 41, earlier this month in Sumter County Court pleaded no contest to a charge of driving under the influence.

Maloney, who lists an address on Ascott Loop in The Villages, told Sumter County sheriff’s deputies on April 12, 2017 that he was new to the area and got lost when he was looking for Wal-Mart. A deputy had spotted the golf cart and initiated a traffic stop at Jennings Citrus at the corner of County Road 466 and U.S. 301.

Maloney provided the deputy with an Ohio identification card and admitted that his license had been suspended for a previous DUI. It appeared Maloney had been drinking.

He failed field sobriety exercises and refused to provide a breath sample.

The golf cart was towed from the scene. While searching Maloney’s backpack, the deputy discovered three cartons of Merlot wine. Two of the cartons were empty and one was full.

Maloney had been convicted of impaired driving in 2013 in Columbus, Ohio and in 2015 in Westerville, Ohio.

Earlier this year, Maloney was tasered outside the Old Mill Playhouse at Lake Sumter Landing. In that case, he has been placed on probation and ordered to perform 50 hours of community service.
