A woman who admitted to taking medication was involved in a two-car crash Monday morning near Rohan Recreation Center in The Villages.
Sharon Lynn Freels, 54, was found slumped over and appeared to be sleeping in her gray four-door sedan when Sumter County sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene at about 9:30 a.m. at 735 Kristen Lane, according to an arrest report. She said she had been in a hurry to get to work, changed lanes and hit another car.
The other driver said the crash occurred on eastbound State Road 44. He said Freels’ vehicle had been “swerving” and he believed she “was on something,” the arrest report said.
During field sobriety exercises, Freels was “unsteady” and failed to touch the tip of her nose as directed. Freels admitted that at about 6 a.m. that morning she had taken the depressant Amitriptyline and Depakote, a medication used to treat seizures and bipolar disorder.
Sumter EMS arrived on the scene and medically cleared Freels.
She was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center. She was released after posting $2,000 bond.
