Carol Schmidt

Carol Schmidt

Carol Laverne Schmidt, 83, of Leesburg, FL, passed away at home, Saturday, December 15, 2018. Carol, one of 11 children, was born July 30, 1935 to the late Charles and Harriet (Burton) Roy in Rudd, IA.

In 1953 she entered the Women’s Army Corps at Fort McClellan, AL. While stationed there, she met a handsome young private named Joseph. After being honorably discharged, Carol joined “Joe” in Miami, FL where they were later united in marriage on August 17, 1957. While calling Miami home for many years, the couple had three children: Deborah, Michael and David. Carol was a selfless and devoted wife and mother who always put others before herself.

She had an enormous passion for her children, as well as countless other children who were lucky enough to know her. Her love and guidance was offered while she served as a Girl Scout leader, homeroom mother, tutoring assistant to teachers, as well as volunteer fund raiser for her church. Carol’s love of children was even more profound when she became blessed with five beautiful grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Throughout all the pain that she suffered in most recent years, she always managed to be the pillar of stability for her family. All who loved her, especially her husband and children, will greatly miss her presence here on earth. We find peace in knowing we will be united again.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 61 years, Joseph; daughter Deborah (Richard); son Michael (Candie); son David (Kym); grandson Joseph; granddaughters Courtney, Jenna, Josephine and Rosalie; great-granddaughter Joselyn; brothers John Roy and James Roy; sisters Jane Anderson and Patricia Poppe; and many more loved ones not mentioned.

Inurnment will be at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL on Friday, December 28, 2018 where military honors will be rendered.

In lieu of flowers please donate, in Carol’s memory, to: Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies, 83 W. Miller St., Orlando, FL 32806.

A “Celebration of Life” service for her will be held at a later date.
