A Lady Lake man has been arrested as the result of a crash earlier this year in which a woman was extricated from a vehicle.
Ryan Thomas Roberts, 28, of 307 Highland Trail, was arrested last week on a warrant charging him with driving under the influence with serious bodily injury. He was booked at the Lake County Jail and released after posting $10,000 bond.
Roberts had been at the wheel of a white Nissan that crashed into a power pole on the morning of July 21 on U.S. Hwy. 27/441 in Fruitland Park. Power lines had fallen to the ground in the crash and first responders had to maneuver around the live lines, according to a probable cause affidavit.
A female passenger, Kayce McRae, “was profusely bleeding and screaming hysterically for help,” the affidavit said.
McRae was being crushed by the vehicle’s engine and “one of her legs was almost completely severed with what appeared to be an open fracture.” She had to be extricated from the vehicle.
Lake County EMS personnel began cutting off Roberts’ clothes in order to treat his injuries. In the process, pills were discovered.
Roberts and McRae were airlifted to Ocala Regional Medical Center. A traffic investigator sent a teletype to the Ocala Police Department to see if Roberts would consent to a blood draw. Roberts indicated he would not consent to the blood draw because he “didn’t want to be poked with a needle.” A search warrant was obtained and a sample of Roberts’ blood was obtained. A lab report was received Aug. 29 from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and it showed that Roberts’ blood tested positive for MDMA and methamphetamine.
Roberts is due for arraignment on Jan. 22 in Lake County Court.
