Villages church evacuated after smoke reported inside building

Multiple units from The Villages Public Safety Department responded to New Covenant United Methodist Church early Tuesday morning after receiving reports of smoke inside the building.

A belt that burned up inside an air conditioning unit forced members of a men’s prayer breakfast to evacuate from the New Covenant United Methodist Church early Tuesday morning.

When firefighters arrived at the church, located at 3470 Woodbridge Drive behind the Southern Trace Plaza Shopping Center, they did a quick assessment of the facility and determined that the issue was caused by a belt that had burned up inside an air conditioning unit.

There were no injuries and no damage to the building, which had been housing a men’s prayer breakfast group when the incident was reported just after 7:30 a.m. Members of Community Watch also responded to the church to help with the call.
