Blood sample taken from driver who caused crash claiming life of Winter Springs man

A blood sample has been taken from a driver who caused a head-on crash which claimed the life of a Winter Springs man.

Christopher Canela, 31, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred at 1:20 a.m. Tuesday at Mile Marker 16 on the Beachline Expressway in Orange County, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

Canela had been at the wheel of a 2015 Chevy van that was struck by a 2014 Dodge SUV driven by 31-year-old Jason Torres, of Orlando. He had been driving in the wrong direction.

Torres was seriously injured in the crash and transported by ambulance to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where a blood sample was drawn.

“All charges will be pending toxicology results,” the FHP said in the accident report.

The crash remains under investigation.

Both men had been wearing their seatbelts.
