Man tied to earlier Villages theft arrest sees quick end to freedom from jail

Dwight Scott Southerland

A Summerfield man who was just released after a five-month stint in jail was arrested again early Sunday after being pulled over for having a headlight out.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office report, a red 2002 Volkswagen driven by 34-year-old Dwight Scott Southerland, of 13600 SE 42nd Ave., was stopped along Southeast 90th Terrace. Southerland admitted to the deputy that his driver’s license was suspended and a computer check revealed that he has multiple suspensions, including habitual offender status.

Southerland, who has 16 arrests in both Marion and Lake counties dating back to 2003, had just been released on Feb. 7 from the Marion County Jail after serving time for driving while license suspended or revoked, petit theft and violating the conditions of his release in Orange County.

Southerland was arrested in The Villages in June after stealing a cell phone from Target. His record over the last 15 years includes other arrests for theft and traffic violations, as well as drug possession.

He was charged with driving while license suspended or revoked and taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released on $5,000 bond. No court date was set.
