Interstate 75 in Sumter County shut down after semi-tractor trailer truck catches fire

The northbound lanes of Interstate 75 in Sumter County were shut down Friday night after a semi-tractor trailer truck caught fire.

Eddie Dickey Jr., 41, of Columbia, S.C., had been at the wheel of the truck at 4:55 p.m. traveling northbound at Mile Marker 308 when the truck suffered a mechanical issue involving the brakes, causing them to overheat and catch fire, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

The truck was driven to the east shoulder of the roadway and stopped, at which point Dickey attempted unsuccessfully to extinguish the flames. The driver and passenger side saddle tanks ruptured and leaked several hundred gallons of diesel fuel onto the roadway. The incident and emergency response closed portions of the northbound lanes until 10:20 p.m. Friday.

Dickey escaped injury.
