A woman was arrested at Mallory Hill Country Club after nearly hitting a Sumter County sheriff’s deputy’s patrol car.
Kayla Ann McDonald, 23, of Summerfield, had been at the wheel of a gold 2007 Chevrolet Impala at 1:30 p.m. Friday when she made a turn in front of the squad car, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. The deputy followed McDonald into the parking lot of the country club and when he approached her vehicle he smelled the strong odor of marijuana. A plastic bag containing marijuana and two glass smoking pipes were found in the car’s center console. McDonald was handcuffed and put in the back of the patrol car.
McDonald’s behavior became “very erratic.” She yelled and cursed at the deputy and began crying.
“She spontaneously stated she only smokes marijuana to help her calm down from her anxiety,” the deputy wrote in the arrest report.
She struggled through field sobriety exercises and provided a urine sample. She was arrested on charges of driving under the influence, possession of marijuana and possession of drug equipment.
McDonald was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center and released after posting $3,000 bond.
