Leesburg man dies in fiery crash when street sweeper slams into dump truck

A Leesburg man was killed Tuesday morning when his street sweeper collided with a dump truck in Polk County.

Darwin Gordon Phillips, 44, of Leesburg, was pronounced dead at the scene of a Tuesday morning crash in Polk County after his street sweeper slammed into the back of a dump truck.

Darwin Gordon Phillips, 44, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 8:42 a.m. crash on Old Grade Road north of Interstate 4 in Polk County, a Florida Highway Patrol report states.

The crash took place when the 2018 Peterbilt dump truck, driven by 50-year-old Jason Lee Davis, of Citrus Springs, stopped to turn left into the Hilochee Wildlife Management Area. The 2006 GMC street sweeper driven by Phillips failed to slow down, slammed into the rear of the dump truck and burst into flames. Phillips suffered fatal injuries in the crash, the report says.

Davis, who was wearing his seatbelt, suffered minor injuries and transported to Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center in Davenport. No charges are being filed as a result of the incident, the report says.
