An estranged boyfriend with an illicit duplicate key was jailed after injuries sent his former girlfriend to a hospital.
Mitchell Gray, 34, of Ocala, on Monday night had been at the home of his live-in girlfriend of six years. Gray and the woman, who lives at Club Wildwood, ended their relationship in January of this year, according to an arrest report from the Wildwood Police Department. Gray left at about 11:30 p.m. and the woman locked the door behind him.
Gray re-entered the woman’s apartment with a duplicate key he had made without her knowledge. They got into an argument that turned physical when she reached for her phone. She tried to walk away, but Gray put her in a “sleeper hold,” the report said.
A child in the home heard the commotion downstairs and as she entered the kitchen, she saw Gray getting “lots of paper towels,” the report said. She saw that the woman had “blood all over her hair.”
The child ran upstairs to call 911, but Gray took the phone from her. The woman and the child struggled into a car to go to the hospital and Gray knocked on the passenger window of their car and gave the phone back to the child.
A Marion County sheriff’s deputy took a statement from the woman at a medical facility in Marion County.
Gray has been arrested on felony charges of burglary, battery and depriving use of 911 communication. He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center on $32,000 bond.
