Community Development District 4 is moving quickly to address sinkhole damage while two uninhabitable home sites continue to languish in the Village of Calumet Grove.
The most visible signs of work on the horizon is the new sections of pipe on the nearby Lopez Championship Golf Course. In May, the CDD 4 Board voted to make an emergency declaration to begin repairs to infrastructure at the site. CDD 4 entered into a contract with Ciarco Undergrounding to make repairs to pipes and roadways damaged by the sinkholes which first opened up back in February 2018.
Meanwhile, no work has been occurring at the two home sites on McLawren Terrace.
In addition to the lack of work at the homes, the new property owner is delinquent on amenity fees, maintenance assessment, Marion County taxes and trash collection fees.
A hopeful sign is the cooperation CDD 4 is receiving from Marion County, which hasn’t always been the case.
Marion County Commissioner Jeff Gold and Marion County’s Director of Building Safety Michael Savage were at Friday’s meeting of the CDD 4 Board and each provided updates on the status of the sinkhole-damaged home sites.
Savage has adopted a carrot-and-stick approach with Hayden Wrobel, whose company has purchased the two sinkhole-damaged homes. If Wrobel is to be granted any more extensions for the work, he will have to meet certain benchmarks set by Savage.
“I have been getting emails from members of the community who are worried about hurricane season and the condition of those houses,” Savage said.
Gold promised members of the audience he would be accessible to them and wants to hear their concerns.
