Villagers upset about lack of progress at home damaged by sinkhole in 2017

Villagers are upset about the lack of progress at a home damaged by a sinkhole in 2017 during Hurricane Irma.

The home at 2536 Botello Avenue in the Village of Alhambra has been purchased by the same company that purchased two homes damaged by sinkholes in February 2018 in the Village of Calumet Grove.

The overgrowth is substantial at the sinkhole-damaged home in the Village of Alhambra.

All three homes have been plagued with inactivity. The lack of stabilization and unkempt appearance of the properties has frustrated neighbors.

Community Development District 2 Supervisor Bill Schikora got an earful from residents at a recent question-and-answer session and raised the topic at Friday’s board meeting.

The lanai has been standing open for many months.

“I would not want something like that in my neighborhood,” said Schikora, of the damaged home on Lago De Leon, where homeowners paid a premium for a water view.

The door to the lanai at the Alhambra home has been standing open for many months and snakes have been seen slithering in and out of the home. There also appear to be wasp nests at the home.

The weeds stand above the water at Lago De Leon.

Residents are also unhappy about tall weeds standing above the water in Lago De Leon.

The issues at the home fall under the responsibility of Sumter County and not The Villages.

District Manager Richard Baier said residents frequently look to their “most local” government unit for a resolution. He encouraged supervisors to tell residents to contact Sumter County about their concerns.
