A woman who was arrested on a theft charge at Home Depot in Lady Lake claimed she needed to steal to pay her electric bill.

A loss prevention officer watched as 47-year-old Barbara Barnes, of Fruitland Park, selected a Milwaukee Ratchet power tool, removed it from the box and concealed it in her purse, according to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department. She also placed other tools in her purse and left the store. The total value of the merchandise was $362.48.

She told police she “was going through hard times” and planned to sell the items to pay her electric bill.

Barnes was arrested on a charge of grand theft and booked at the Lake County Jail. She has also been charged with violating her probation on a previous conviction of driving while license suspended. She was being held without bond.
