Troubled daughter dodges prosecution in theft of Villager’s money

A troubled daughter has dodged prosecution in the theft of her mother’s money during a surprise early morning encounter.

Dawn Marie Morris, 52, had been arrested April 8 after she was found slumped over the wheel of a vehicle parked at Arbor Medical at Laurel Manor Professional Plaza.

Her mother, a resident of the Village of Santo Domingo, had called 911 early on the morning of April 4 to report the theft of money from her wallet. She said she had been sleeping on the couch when she was awakened by a noise. She found her daughter crawling on the floor behind the couch. Morris had cash in one hand and her mother’s wallet in the other hand.

Morris’ mother grabbed the cash and the wallet and demanded to know how Morris had gotten into the home. It was later determined she had gotten in through a window at the rear of the home.

Morris got away with $20, the arrest report indicated.

Earlier this month in Sumter County Court, Morris agreed to enter into a pre-trial diversion program. If she successfully completes the program, the theft charge will be dismissed. An earlier charge of burglary has also been dismissed.

Morris was reported missing in 2016 and at the time was living with her parents, who purchased their home in 2005 in the Village of Santo Domingo. Morris’ father passed away in 2017.

At the time of her disappearance in 2016, Morris was driving her parents’ red Toyota Camry with a handicapped license plate. The car was used as a getaway vehicle in the slaying of a Lady Lake man.

Morris was later found in Boynton Beach. She claimed the Camry had been stolen.
