The Medical Examiner’s Office was called in to investigate after the body of a 55-year-old resident of The Villages was found in a storage unit.
The manager of Allstor Self Storage at 114 W. Guava St. in Lady Lake had been making the rounds at about noon Tuesday when he noticed a car parked at a storage unit, according to an incident report from the Lady Lake Police Department.
The door of the storage unit was unlocked and the manager opened it and spotted the renter laying on a couch inside the unit. When the manager called out and got no response, he closed the door and contacted law enforcement.
When police arrived they found the Village of Liberty Park resident in a semi fetal position with a red T-shirt covering his head. He had “severe rigor mortis.”
There were several prescription medications nearby and the man was surrounded by 30 empty beer bottles, the report indicated. His phone was found and the last phone call/text had been made on Saturday.
Police were able to locate the man’s sister, also a resident of The Villages, who said her brother had a “very bad drinking problem and struggled with alcoholism for a long time.”
His body was turned over to a local funeral home, but a “medical hold” was put on it by the Medical Examiner’s office.
Police found no evidence of foul play.
