The Marion County Sheriff’s Office has instituted a prescription drug drop-off box program that will enable residents to safely dispose of their prescription medications all year.
The goal of this new program is to combat the local, state and national opioid crisis by collecting unwanted or unused medications that have the potential to fall into the hands of those who may abuse them.
With the contribution of funds from the AdventHealth system and the Florida Department of Health of Marion County, the sheriff’s office will be able to place drop-off boxes at each of its district offices and the Belleview Police Department. Those boxes will be available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The sheriff’s office’s Evidence Division will collect the prescriptions and properly dispose of them according to Drug Enforcement Administration regulations.
Sheriff Billy Woods said taking these prescription drugs off the street will help alleviate the possibility of theft.
“By removing these unused prescription drugs from your home, they cannot find their way into the hands of loved ones or criminals,” he said. “Please take advantage of these drug boxes. We want to keep our citizens safe.
