To the Editor:
My name is Oren L. Miller and I am the chairman of the Campaign Committee to Reverse One Sumter. Prior to 2004, each county commissioner was elected by residents representing their district. The election in 2004 created “One Sumter” which stipulated that all county residents elect all five Commissioners.
“One Sumter” is misnamed; each of the five districts represent widely differing strengths and needs. The result is that residents, regardless of where they live, are not being adequately represented.
It comes down to this: commissioners outside your community are making decisions affecting you. Our goal is to REVERSE ONE SUMTER and return single member representative government back to the people.
We are tasked with getting 12,000 petitions signed to put a referendum on the ballot next year that asks – Do you want the five County Commissioners of Sumter County to be elected from a single-member districts by electors residing in each of those districts only? The correct answer is YES. We need to make the Commissioners accountable to the electors in every district of Sumter County.
If you want a petition please send an email to me at orenlmiller@centurylink.net.
