Commission receives assurance on future of Post Office on Historic Side of The Villages

The Lady Lake Commission has approved a plan for the replacement of the U.S. Post Office on the Historic Side of The Villages.

The proposed plan on behalf of The Villages was put before the commission Monday night at Lady Lake Town Hall. Martin Dzuro of The Villages has indicated “the same level of service” will be considered at the new post office.

“I am glad to hear the same level of service will continue,” said Mayor Jim Richards.

The post office is unique in that it is the only full-service post office located within the yellow lines of The Villages. In 2017, when The Villages announced it would be revamping La Plaza Grande North, where the Post Office is located, there were fears that the unique facility would cease to exist.

Much of La Plaza Grande North was demolished, leaving behind vacant land. Survivors of the demolition included the El Ranchito restaurant, the Circle K service station, Tire Choice and the Post Office.

The plan from The Villages calls for the construction of a one-story 5,008-square-foot concrete block building with 1,632 square feet for postal operations and 3,376 square feet for mailboxes.

There will be 14 parking places, including one handicapped-accessible spot.
