Villages resident hospitalized after crashing 87-year-old mother’s Smart car

A Villages resident was hospitalized after crashing his 87-year-old mother’s Smart car while fleeing from law enforcement.

James Gilzow, 60, who is living on Jimenez Court in the Village of Santo Domingo, was at the wheel of the 2013 Smart car at 11:05 p.m. Thursday fleeing from a traffic stop at U.S. Hwy. 27/441 and Buenos Aires Boulevard, according to an arrest report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

Gilzow attempted a right turn at El Camino Real and struck a raised concrete median before colliding with a metal utility light pole.

Gilzow, who was driving on a New York driver’s license, was transported by ambulance to Ocala Regional Medical Center for injuries suffered in the crash. He was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and reckless driving. He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center and released after posting $1,500.
