Homeless man to answer in court after attempted theft at hotel in The Villages

Ronald Gillis

A homeless man will have to answer in court after an attempted theft at a hotel in The Villages.

Ronald Gillis, 45, is scheduled to appear Nov. 21 in Lake County Court after allegedly attempting to break into a dryer in the guest laundry room at the Comfort Suites on Avenida Central, according to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department.

An employee on Halloween saw Gillis walk through the front doors of the hotel and carry a backpack to the guest laundry room. The employee watched on surveillance as Gillis removed tools from his backpack and tried to steal coins from one of the dryers.

When police arrived, Gillis claimed he had seen a YouTube video which showed how you can manipulate the box to turn on the dryer. He claimed he simply wanted to dry his clothes.

Gillis then claimed he was having a hard time breathing. Lake EMS arrived on the scene and Gillis was transported to The Villages Regional Hospital. He was issued a notice to appear in court.
