To the Editor:
Here we go again…another “brilliant” idea by The Developer’s people!
Historically, a few generations ago, all of us Villagers were considered to be VIPs. Now most of us of moderate means are either being downgraded to something less, or others are offered the opportunity to upgrade to “Super VIPs” with special privileges to watch and participate in the Christmas Tree Lighting experience for a mere $50 per person, $80 per couple and $225 for a table for six. Oh yes, to make this more “legitimate,” we’re told that “a portion” of these fees will be donated to three very worthy organizations.
Here’s my suggestion to my fellow Villagers: Make a greater impact by donating what you would have spent on VIP tickets directly to Ronald McDonald House, Lake Sumter Children’s Advocacy Center and Operation Shoebox, or another charity of your choosing.
And here’s my suggestion to The Developer’s people: Scrap the elitist idea of “VIPs”. Instead, provide donation boxes at all town squares were everyone attending the tree lighting ceremonies can share in the spirit of Christmas by supporting these charities within their own means.
