A Umatilla man wanted for armed robbery was jailed early Sunday morning after a standoff with Leesburg Police officers in the parking lot of a Main Street gas station.
Officers initiated contact with 31-year-old Charles David Hall late Saturday night after he was spotted sitting in a stolen vehicle in the parking lot of the Sunoco at 1200 W Main St. At the time, he was believed to be armed and refused to exit the vehicle when given commands by the officers, a report says.
As a result of the incident, officers cordoned off the parking lot, closed the store and redirected all traffic around the area of Main and 12th streets. Officers weren’t sure of Hall’s intentions so the SWAT team and crisis negotiator Seth Pincus were called to the scene. Pincus quickly established voice contact with Hall and worked diligently to elicit his surrender while SWAT team members – with a K-9 unit – maneuvered for tactical intervention should it be needed.
After about two hours of continuous negotiations, Hall exited the vehicle and surrendered. During a subsequent search, officers recovered a concealed Taurus Judge handgun in the waistline of his pants, the report says.
In addition to the pre-existing charges from Marion County, Hall was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, carrying a concealed firearm, resisting/obstructing without violence and knowingly driving with license suspended or revoked. He was being held in the Lake County Jail on $103,000 bond and is due in court Feb. 18 at 8:30 a.m. to answer to the charges.
