Sumter County has terminated its relationship with two emergency medicine physicians who helped bring improvements to the medical care of the county’s paramedics and emergency medical technicians.
County Administrator Bradley Arnold told commissioners Tuesday night that both Dr. John Geeslin and Dr. Frank Franfelter have been informed of their termination effective April 30 as directors of the county’s emergency medical services.
The county now has a contract with the University of Florida College of Medicine that began March 1 to provide the service.
Arnold said Geeslin and Fraunfelter helped develop advanced life support procedures for first responders as well as other improvements.
“These medical doctors have done a great job,” he said. “It’s just a next step up and I look forward to the value (the College of Medicine) will bring to that process.”
Geeslin, a graduate of the Florida College of Medicine, is helping with the transition, Arnold said.
The doctor is an emergency medical physician in Wildwood who has practiced for more than two decades.
Fraunfelter, an emergency medicine specialist, graduated with honors from the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1996. With 25 years in practice, he is affiliated with the Ocala Regional Medical Center.
He also has served as Marion County Medical Director and led the county’s efforts to prepare for the Ebola virus in 2014.
