Frustration is boiling over for dog owners due to COVID-19 precautions in The Villages.
The dog parks have been shut down in Florida’s Friendliest Hometown, as part of the precautions in place to protect residents from the possible spread of the Coronavirus.
Last weekend, a collection bin outside the Paradise Dog Park on the Historic Side was overflowing with bags of dog poop. The unsanitary scene incensed dog owners and non-dog-owners alike.
Looking for an outlet for their cooped-up canine companions, some Villagers began taking their dogs to the Sharon Wiechens Preserve, even though a sign at the entrance clearly states, “No Dogs Allowed.” Villagers were reportedly allowing their dogs to run off leash at the preserve.
Now the preserve has been shut down, upsetting the bird watchers and nature lovers who have long adhered to the rules.
The District Office has posted a reminder on its website that, “It is unlawful to trespass into any closed recreation or District facility (pools, dog parks, etc.)”
Cathy Coppini of Bedtime Tails Luxury Pet Hotel in Summmerfield said she is fielding more calls from Villagers interested in boarding or day boarding their dogs, as a result of the shutdown of dog parks in The Villages. The facility has room for dogs to play and socialize with other dogs. The dog care provider is considered an “essential” service and offers pickup and delivery service.
