Man claiming to have Coronavirus arrested after spitting at ambulance crew

Chaz Hampton

A man claiming to have the Coronavirus was arrested after spitting at an ambulance crew.

Sumter County sheriff’s deputies had been called shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday to County Road 229 in Oxford where a group had zip-tied and duct-taped 32-year-old Chaz Maurine Hampton because he was acting “crazy.” Hampton was put into handcuffs and had been escorted into the back of a Sumter County EMS ambulance when he coughed and cleared his throat. He spat on three of the EMS personnel and claimed he has the Coronavirus. They were able to duck out of the way.

Hampton, who had been arrested last year after crashing a car at a local assisted living construction site, was transported to UF Health The Villages Hospital for a medical evaluation. He was arrested on three felony counts of battery on an EMT. He is also facing a charge of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center on $25,000 bond.
