A 17-year-old from Summerfield was killed in a high-speed pickup crash Wednesday night on U.S. 301 in Marion County.
The teen’s pickup truck had been traveling at a “high rate of speed” when he failed to negotiate a left curve, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol. He overcorrected and lost control of the pickup. The truck then traveled back across the roadway in a northwesterly direction and entered the west grass shoulder, while rotating clockwise. It then overturned several times on the west grass shoulder, causing the driver and passenger to be ejected, the report said.
Neither of the teens had been wearing seatbelts.
The crash occurred on a two-lane stretch of U.S. 301 at 144 Place Road. There is a U.S. Post Office nearby and the crash site is also near the Iglesia Pentecostal Refugio de Salvacion Church.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by Marion County Fire Rescue. The passenger suffered minor injuries and was transported to the Ocala Regional Medical Center.
