A homeless man was arrested after allegedly loading up a stolen backpack at a Wal-Mart store in The Villages.
Sumter County sheriff’s deputies were called at 5:20 p.m. Saturday to the store at Buffalo Ridge Plaza where they arrested 54-year-old Lloyd Charles Weidenhammer.
A loss prevention officer told deputies that Weidenhammer entered the store and selected a backpack and put it into a shopping cart along with other merchandise. He went to the garden section where he transferred the merchandise into the backpack.
Weidenhammer slung the backpack over his shoulder and proceeded to a checkout where he paid only for a potted plant. He left the store without paying for the backpack or the merchandise in it. The items had a total value of $416.97.
When he was taken into custody, the Reading, Pa. native admitted he had one gram of methamphetamine in his pocket.
He was arrested on charges of theft and drug possession. He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center on $4,000 bond.
