New York pair arrested in child custody battle at turnpike service plaza

A man and a woman from New York were arrested in a child custody battle at the Okahumpka Service Plaza on the Florida Turnpike in Sumter County.

Jason Colburn, 41, and Heather Ann Way, 35, both of Gouverneur, N.Y. were arrested on charges of battery after the altercation which took place Thursday afternoon, according to an arrest report from the Wildwood Police Department.

They used their vehicle to block another man’s vehicle at the service plaza. The pair attempted to make contact with the children in the man’s car and Colburn put the man in a bear hug, the report said. The man fought to break free, got back into his vehicle and then drove over a curb to get away from the pair.

Colburn and Way were taken into custody and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center.
