Sumter County resident and two state prison inmates succumb to COVID-19

Another Sumter County resident and two inmates at the state prison in Bushnell have died from the Coronavirus.

The Sumter resident was identified as an 87-year-old man who hadn’t traveled recently nor come in contact with someone else suffering from COVID-19. He tested positive on April 30.

Specific information about the two inmates at the Sumter Correctional Institution wasn’t provided by the Florida Department of Corrections. The only other state prison reporting deaths among inmates is the Black Water River Correctional Facility in Milton, where seven have been recorded.

But the prison is now reporting 118 cases of COVID-19 among 102 inmates and 16 staff members. Two prisoners are in medical isolation and another 910 are in medical quarantine.

As of Thursday, there were a total of 711 COVID-19 cases in the tri-county area, an increase of just two from Wednesday’s numbers. There have been 35 deaths and 138 people have been hospitalized.

Sumter County is reporting 246 cases, an increase of just one in a 24-hour period. There have been 16 deaths and 42 people have required some form of hospital care.

Lake County also increased by one case to 248. There have been 14 deaths and 66 people have been hospitalized.

Marion County remained steady at 217 COVID-19 cases. There have been five deaths and 30 people have been seen at area hospitals.

All told, Florida is reporting 43,210 cases, with 42,038 of those being residents. There have been 1,875 deaths and 7,749 people have been hospitalized across the Sunshine State.
