17th Sumter County resident dies of COVID-19 as Florida tops 47,000 cases

Another Sumter County resident has succumbed to the Coronavirus as Florida surpassed 47,000 cases of the virus.

The latest victim was identified as a 55-year-old man who hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with someone else suffering from COVID-19. He tested positive on April 21 but it’s unclear where he lived in Sumter County.

As of Wednesday, the tri-county area was reporting 741 COVID-19 cases, an increase of seven from Tuesday. They are comprised of 399 men, 320 women, 21 non-residents and one who listed as unknown. There have been 36 deaths and 144 people have been hospitalized.

Sumter County, which contains the vast majority of homes in The Villages, was holding steady at 253 cases among 180 men, 70 women and three non-residents. There have been 17 deaths – including Villagers Carol Lynch and Debbie Butler – and 44 patients have required hospital care.

Lake County increased by three cases in a 24-hour period to 260 among 121 men, 125 women, 13 non-residents and one labeled as unknown. There have been 14 deaths and 69 patients have been hospitalized.

Marion County increased by four cases to 228. Those are comprised of 98 men, 125 women and five non-residents. There have been five deaths and 31 people have been seen in area hospitals.

All told, Florida is now reporting 47,471 COVID-19 cases, an increase of 527 from Tuesday to Wednesday. Of those, 46,197 are residents. There have been 2,096 deaths and 8,681 people have required some form of hospital care across the Sunshine State.
