Hatchet-tossing Summerfield man jailed after nasty tiff with Belleview man friend

Doran Roger Roberts

A Summerfield man accused of smacking a Belleview man and throwing a hatchet at his truck found himself behind bars late Wednesday afternoon.

Marion County sheriff’s deputies spoke with 56-year-old Doran Roger Roberts, who was at the corner of SE 150th Street and S. Hwy 475, not far from his residence where the altercation took place. Roberts, who deputies noted “appeared to be intoxicated and smelled of alcohol,” said he had been in an argument with the Belleview man, who he claimed had pulled a gun on him, a report says.

The Belleview man said he and Roberts got into an altercation about some work that needed to be completed at the property on SE 150th Street. He said Roberts got into his face and struck him on the back of his head with his hand. He also claimed Roberts had tossed a hatchet at his truck before walking westbound on SE 150th Street, the report says, noting that there was no damage to the vehicle.

A criminal history check showed that Roberts had been adjudicated guilty for domestic battery (second offense) in Marion County on Jan. 23, 2002. It also showed that on Nov. 1, 2012, he was adjudicated guilty for battery on a police officer, firefighter, EMT in Monroe County.

Roberts was taken into custody and transported to the Marion County Jail, where he was charged with domestic battery. He was being held on $5,000 bond and is due in court June 30 at 9 a.m.

Roberts also was arrested in June 2019 after a woman reported a rampage inside her vehicle. She claimed that he had broken the passenger-side dashboard trim and pulled out an air vent while having a tirade. She estimated the damage at $600.
