Social unrest and a divided community

To the Editor:

Everyone is disturbed by the widespread social unrest unleashed by the most recent police inflicted death in Minneapolis. I called friends around the country and it is not confined to just large metropolitan cities or the East and West coasts.
Even nearby Orlando had demonstrations, vandalism and arrests. Why? If you read widely, social scientists have forewarned of this angry underbelly of society and the potential for widespread eruption of violence for some time. Some of the reasons are the ever increasing disparity in incomes, the decline of the middle class that made America so strong in the late 40’s, 50’s and beyond. The recent restrictions on upward mobility and the death of the “American Dream” for so many.
When I was in college, there were National Defense scholarships with a 2 percent interest rate and if you became a teacher, you didn’t have to pay it back. Now, scholarships are based in banks with high interest rates and schools with no credentials and useless programs lure poor students into huge debt but provide no jobs.
How can we fix it?
What we are doing now has made it worse; the political tribalism that divides us, the hate and fear spewed across social media, the plethora of “news” that isn’t news or even factual, the conspiracy theory that is disguised as “news”, and a POTUS, with a mouth that any good mother would regularly wash out with soap, that encourages division and hate and fails to lead.
I am a lifelong Republican. I saw the Villagers for Trump ad that advertised a dinner talk by Alex Newman, so I researched him to see if I wanted to attend. I was shocked. This is a man who talks about the “Deep State” behind the “Deep State” and wild conspiracies of all the online social media including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, against him and his writings; he wants to abolish all public schools saying they teach socialist propaganda and replace them with an online school he touts as teaching only from the Bible (Old & New Testament) and that the pandemic is a plot by the “Deep State” to control the population and take away freedom, and that Bill Gates owns a patent on the virus and is using it to make money and will force vaccinations on all in order to implant a device under your skin to control you.
That is insanity.
That kind of vast conspiracy promotion is antithetical to a rational discussion & attempt to solve the problems that are being experienced now. That much division and extremes of paranoia are an illness on society.
The Villages already has a divided community problem. Nothing about Mr. Newman’s opinions are something that should be believed or promoted. He has no credentials for his opinions. Usually, speakers have experience or education or publications with prestigious well respected universities or journals. Newman has none of these. I would urge the Villagers for Trump to un-invite Newman and just enjoy a dinner and good conversation on June 11. Please do not listen to or participate in the hate, paranoia, and attempts to instill fear that he spews. Our society will not solve its problems with those false narratives.
