Man dies of gunshot wound after ex-girlfriend claims he was breaking into her home

A man died of a gunshot wound to the neck late Sunday night after allegedly being shot by his ex-girlfriend as he tried to enter her Fruitland Park home.

Lake County deputies received a call just before midnight of a burglary in progress at a residence in the 36900 block of Shadow Hill Drive. The woman who called for help claimed her former boyfriend, Thomas Brown, was attempting to come through a window and she had shot at him with an air rifle, a Lake County sheriff’s report states.

Lake County sheriff’s deputies requested the assistance of officers from the Fruitland Park Police Department, who were the first to arrive at the home. They found Thomas lying outside the home. He initially was breathing but then officers couldn’t locate a pulse and started performing CPR on him. An EMS unit arrived a short time later and Thomas was declared dead, the report says.

The first officers to arrive spoke with the homeowner through a closed door and requested her to come outside. She was apprehensive to comply but eventually came out to speak with the officers and deputies. She asked for an attorney and told deputies numerous times to either charge her or release her, the report states.
