Are we putting the burden on schools?

To the Editor:

For many years we’ve passed societal problems along to schools without giving them the necessary resources.
We haven’t solved poverty but sent kids to school; the schools and teachers said “OK, we’ll deal with it,” and did their best to help the kids.
We haven’t eliminated hunger or food insecurity but sent kids to school; the schools and teachers said “OK, we’ll deal with it,” and did their best to help the kids.
We allowed segregated housing and systemic racism to fester but sent kids to school; the schools and teachers said “OK, we’ll deal with it,” and did their best to help the kids.
After we’ve failed to control the virus, Trump, DeVos, and DeSantis want kids back in school. Only now, schools and teachers are saying, “Not this time!” And rightly so. That’s the best thing they can do to help the kids.
