We need accurate news about COVID-19

To the Editor:

In the recent Letter to the Editor, “Let’s hear the good news about COVID-19”, the January COVID situation was compared to today’s situation; things are better today compared to that period when traveling and socializing for the Christmas holidays contributed to the January high numbers.
It is more important to compare today’s 7-day average new COVID case numbers with the numbers on March 20, 2021, when Florida’s number was at a low for the year 2021. As of end-of-day April 14, the good news is that Sumter County’s new cases are 16 percent lower. The bad news is the number of new cases is up for Marion County (+41 percent), Lake County (+79 percent), Orange County (+72 percent), and the state of Florida (+44 percent). Forty states have lower new case rates less than Florida; those 40 states are safer than Florida; that means that 40 states are safer than Florida. Unfortunately, facts are often bad news.
